AERIAL DRONES – A NEW TEAM MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL PAYING AGENCY

AERIAL DRONES – A NEW TEAM MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL PAYING AGENCY
Aerial drones are bringing a new wave of tech into modern farming, contributing to the modernisation of IACS processes and therefore – to a more effective National Paying Agency (NPA) work.

At the end of 2019 the NPA obtained 17 new generation drones (14 Parrot Anafi and 3 DJI Phantom 4 RTK and reserve batteries), though drones in the NPA daily activities had been used in the past too. These devices are used for taking ortophoto images, performing measurement processes during the field visits and on-the-spot checks (OTSC). Their usage significantly increases the efficiency of the NPA daily work, especially in places which are physically difficult to reach (wetlands, islands, forests, gardens, etc.), sometimes with up to 100 ha area, where Area Monitoring System (AMS) approach, geotagged photos cannot be used. It is worth mentioning, that using the latest technologies makes not only the work of inspectors much easier, but also saves farmers' time – the number of visits to the farms is significantly reduced, and farmers can carry out their daily work without interruption.

Drones are also used to check the investments into infrastructure (rooftops, fences, etc.), and as of 2021 they will be used to produce localised (for example, in rapidly growing suburb areas) orthophoto images for regular LPIS update, since good quality of LPIS is the key factor for successful AMS implementation.

Drones significantly contribute to the IACS modernisation, though there are still limits of their usage, i.e., as regards covering bigger areas, etc.
